Back in April, Beaverton-based Nike announced the return of the original Hypervenom Phantom 1: a throwback cleat once famously worn by the likes of Ibrahimović, Rooney, Lewandowski, Harry Kane, Higuaín, Isco and Mauro Icardi. However, with the original colourway still pending a return, the brand have just unveiled a much more interesting version that looks to keep appetites whet.

Debuting a decade after the original tech first cracked necks, the new ‘Transform Hydra’ Hypervenom Phantom 1 brings back water-reactive innovation in full force. The boot features a pale grey upper that changes colour when wet, revealing bold hits of blue and black across the surface. It’s a smart blend of subtle and statement, with visual impact built directly into the design.

Soft, pliable and built for sharp touch and close control, the sole plate swaps out the classic tooling for the more advanced Hypervenom III base, adding extra stability and traction. While the shape may have evolved since its debut 2013, the core focus remains – high-level performance with unmistakable identity.

This isn’t the first time Nike has used this kind of tech to pretty exciting visual effect. For the uninitiated, the model's predecessor turned out a deceptively simple, black exterior – but the finish was heat-activated, revealing orange details under the stealth as soon as the wearer cranked their heart rate up a notch or two.

Much like the original Hypervenom, you can expect a bevy of top-class athletes to sport these cleats – Lautaro Martinez laced them up for last weekend’s Champions League final, in fact.

Enjoy a closer look at the Nike Hypervenom Phantom I 'Transform Hydra' above. The boots are expected to hit Nike and select retailers on June 2.
