VINTAGE SNEAKERS - BAMBASTICS RECAP!

With Bread and Butter moving to Berlin this year, the next step for Barcelona was to create a fresh new tradeshow for those heads that couldn’t go without their fix. What they came up with was Outerspace – The Brandery (Post Fashion Circus) showcasing only the finest our culture has to offer. Their first order of business was to unleash the killer Sneaker Show – Bambastics. Best book in with your chiropractor now - the sneakers you are about to see will snap you from your neck to your nuts! Big ups to our Spanish Sneaker Freakers who copped the lowdown for us.

LOADED - NEW ZEALAND

Loaded is to New Zealand’s sneaker culture what Grandmaster Flash is to Hip Hop. They were the first to put stores dedicated to sneakers on the map for NZ and command respect from all the followers, merely by continuing to stay on top of their game and ahead of the race. We caught up with the whole gang from Loaded Wellington and Loaded Auckland to give us the dirt on the NZ scene and give you an exclusive look into why "Just like Wu-Tang… Loaded is for the children."

DAVE THE CHIMP INTERVIEW

Sneaker chimpin’ ain’t easy, especially when you’re one of the original few that now finds it tough to sell out in a scene so obsessed with chasing paper. Dave The Chimp has been lurking in the dark alleys of Clerkenwell for nearly two decades throwing down his cartoon style characters on any solid surface he could find. A quick diagnosis of RSI led him to think ‘big’ and with that, it was hard not to notice his satirical comic artwork throughout the glum and grey surroundings of his UK hometown. A winning proposal to skate giants Vans has left the Chimp with a lot of explaining to do, with his contradictory efforts to stay loyal to his humble past yet keep himself cashed up enough not to have to succumb to a nine to five. We caught up with Dave for a hilarious chinwag and got the grit on the art known as ‘street’.

TROOP IS BACK IN TOWN!

Troop was the ultimate '80s/'90s hip hop brand – crazy hightops, gold badges, huge branding – their sneakers certainly had a presence that defied good taste. In our eyes, the brand is immortal, but build quality was poor, meaning vintage Troops are pretty sparse these days. In May this year, we were contacted by Randy Scurlock who informed us that the old dinosaur was back in town! Holy calamity... Troop lives! Hurrah! Our initial excitement was tempered when we saw the roll-out models – they’re well made and look good, but the selection could have been a lot bolder and closer to the brand’s vibrant heritage. Where are the true Troops? We threw down some Q’s and let Randy do the talking...

LEMAR AND DAULEY INTERVIEW

Lemar & Dauley is a streetwear brand that sure are hard to pin down. With a past history of crazy colour and kinetic graphics, the guys are also heavily influenced by art, using Warhol's Soup cans (ode to Pop Art), Haring’s Radiant Baby symbol and their own compact, often semantic slogans to good effect. With a past footwear colab with adidas already in the can, this time the boys have buttered up with a new project for DC,incorporating the lure of the beach and regatta sailing, mixed with their knowledge of fashion and revamped the Admiral collection for DC, making it one of the most visually daring releases for 2009. This is not one for the faint hearted...

GET ON THE MADFOOT!

Takashi Imai is a designer and the director of MADFOOT!. On this fine day at his studio in Harajuku he tells how he got into sneakers and how MADFOOT! was started. His first encounter with sneakers was over 25 years ago in 1980 at the age of 10. The sneakers are still fresh in his memory; the first pair he loved was a pair of PUMA SM Riders. His father’s interest in marathons around the same time complemented his interest in cool running shoes which he would pick up one pair after another.

AMANDA LOPEZ (VANS-TRUE STORY SERIES)

Having picked up a camera in her teenage years, photographer Amanda Lopez slowly developed an impressive reel of happy snaps that has led her to work with mags such as XXL, Mass Appeal and The Source. Add to that a stint as Estevan Oriol's assistant and you know this lady has the skills to pay the bills. Winding down her critically acclaimed True Story Series exhibition which details her travels through the eyes of her beat up Vans, La Lopez is in the process of creating another slice of history with a new book called ‘Girls Got Kicks.’ The book is set to be published in conjunction with Female Sneaker Fiend Lori Lobenstine and will travel worldwide to chronicle the crusade of women and their sneakers!

LIJFSTIJL INTERVIEW (ROTTERDAM)

With one of the world’s most unpronounceable shop names, Lijfstijl has been teasing sneakerheads with sneakpeeks of their upcoming collabo with New Balance. Leave it to Sneaker Freaker to get the dirt on this drop with an exclusive interview with the Rotterdam based crew. With their inspiring motto ‘we don’t talk, we walk’, we strapped on our Oranjeboom to venture into one of the most intriguing cities in Europe.

VINTAGE SNEAKER COLLECTOR - CHRIS AYLEN

It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and seeing Chris Aylen’s collection of Nike Air Max Plus’, Seismic and Kukini, it’s interesting to find out just what drew this Londoner to such an iconoclastic design direction. With the seeds of his obsession sown as a little chap, it was actually a throw-up from a famed graffiti artist that sent Chris on his quest to find the perfect sneaker, albeit with plastic mucus straps! Chris Aylen is the personification of a true sneaker collector, read on to find out why!
