What do you think of when you think of bamboo? Pandas? That's fair enough. They're a furry and cute endangered animal that pretty much never stops chowing down on the jungle's bamboo buffet. They're chubby gluttons, for sure, but they're not the only animals who do the boo. There's the golden bamboo lemur too – it is indigenous to Madagascar and puts away about half a kilo of the stuff a day. That's enough to kill a human! I know what you're thinking, 'C'mon, we eat bamboo too, whatchutalkingbout?!' Well we do, but first it is treated, be that through boiling, pickling, fermentation or some other funky cook-up. Raw bamboo actually produces cyanide in our insides, and that's not fresh. Also, not many of us get down on the grown man bamboo, we eat the shoots or 'culms'. We grab those suckers when they're little babies and take them to the vegetable abattoir before serving 'em up with our fave Asian foods. I could eat ten pounds of that stuff when it's drenched in some Szechuan spice. Nice. We gotta be quick in getting those shoots, though, as bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth!
