Released in the year 2000, the SauconyGRID Web epitomised the seismic style changes rippling through the athletic goods industry at the turn of the Y2K millennium. Conservative minimalism was suddenly on the outer, replaced by oversized ‘cushion’ monsters with thumping midsoles and kinetic uppers.
The GRID Web clearly did not subscribe to architect Mies van der Rohe’s ‘less is more’ design philosophy. The beefy upper laid an organic ‘web’ cage over wide-open sports mesh, while graphical strakes raced across the toes and heels – a motif that suggested bountiful speed. Gradient fades on the Saucony logo and webbing added extra doses of panache.
The tech sheet was basic but compelling. Saucony’s patented GRID cushioning system was hidden away inside the heels. Underfoot, Saucony designers retained the brand’s trademark triangular lugs and flex grooves, adding a plastic TRB Shank to bridge the heel and forefoot. A compact stretch-fit neoprene gusset protected the top end of the laces, with three Scotchlite-enhanced dots added as a reference to Saucony’s iconic ‘river’ logo.
Some 19 years after its chunky ‘dad-bod’ rump first pounded pavements all over the globe, the GRID Web will return to stores on July 26. Look out!
