Pairing a brand new upper with the tooling of the React Element 87, the kicks were helmed by the Swoosh's newly created ISPA, a program spearheaded by Nike Sportswear's special projects. As the Swoosh explains it, ISPA 'takes the tried-and-true Nike ethos of listening to the athlete, but with a twist: Rather than dissect the challenges of establishing a new sprint record, the team focuses on improving interaction with the built environment.' The result is the creation of performance footwear specifically geared toward the everyday wearer.
The first-ever ISPA-branded design packs some of Nike's latest tech — including React cushioning — into a package that's perfect for urban commutes on foot and intended to withstand anything mother nature throws its way. React aside, the kicks are highlighted by a deconstructed mid-top bootie with a water-resistant finish.
'It's the honesty about the method the shoes are made with that makes it fascinating,' explains Darryl Matthews, ISPA Design Innovation Lead. 'The process from which we explored the product is clear in its aesthetic. The upper is engineered to the exact specifications of an internal waterproof liner that you would commonly find in-between the lining and upper of a waterproof ACG hiking boot. It is exactly what it is! We also made sure the pattern heights and method of make were correct in what constitutes as a fully waterproof product — for this shoe that’s where the element of protect really shines.'
Stay tuned for a closer look at the design and expect the React LW WR Mid ISPA to debut on November 21.
