When New Balance launched the 990 in 1982, it set a new benchmark as the first ever sneaker to creep into three-figure territory – far and above anything else before it. Although expensive, the purchase price brought with it an unparalleled level of quality, a pursuit that has remained at the core of the 99X line to this day. While New Balance continue to deliver some of the finest mass-produced shoes on the market, Up There Store's creative director Jason Paparoulas decided to take that ambition to its utmost pinnacle in the creation of his homage to the 997GY in conjunction with BespokeIND.
A one-of-one creation, this tribute redefines the meaning of premium. The subdued grey colour scheme if the 997GY has been reproduced using a menagerie of exotic and high-end leathers. Grey nurse sharkskin, giraffe and kangaroo leathers are united, together with bubbled lamb leather and suede, for buttery soft uppers with engaging textural variation.
Crafted by hand in the heart of Melbourne, Australia, the crew at BespokeIND have constructed this New Balance 997Gy homage with maximum attention to detail. While this one-of-one creation is not for sale, BespokeIND offer complete bespoke sneaker fabrication from the sole up. Head to their website for more details.
