The Making Of The Nike HyperAdapt 1.0

It may have taken Nike until 2016 to make science fiction reality with the release of their first self-lacing sneaker, but its creation didn't come without years of experimentation. There was every bit of expectation that the Swoosh would finally bring us a self-lacing Mag this year, but the crew at Beaverton managed to surprise everybody with the announcement of the HyperAdapt 1.0. Nike have now lifted the veil off the creative process behind the first retail-available self-lacing sneaker, exhibiting three major prototypes that lead to its final design.

The earliest of these creations bears a strong resemblance to the original Mag and features a mid-cut design and thick ankle strap with a white and cream upper and Carolina Blue Swoosh. According to co-designer Tiffany Beers, this pair is the first underfoot prototype and made to match the first round of sketches produced by Tinker Hatfield. 'This shoe was a completely new mechanism. We tried some different things, and all five laces were being pulled at the same time in this version.'

The second design, rendered in all black, retains a mid-cut form but heavily streamlines the original aesthetics. 'This was our first time trying to make multiple mechanisms based on the new tech we built,' Beers stated. 'Only two laces were being pulled, unlike the five in the first prototype.'

The third design – and one that would ultimately become the HyperAdapt 1.0 – features a low-cut design in all-black, with the exception of the signature glowing MT2 unit in the midsole. Fingers crossed, like the shoes themselves, this stealth colourway becomes available to the public.

If you want to get your hands on a pair of the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, you still have a chance. Nike are holding a pre-Christmas restock in the US, though numbers are seriously limited.
