Everybody wants to be like Mike. Not in the sense that they want to wear terrible suits or become a teary meme, but surely we all desire to excel in some aspect of life.
Over the first decade of his professional basketball career (and, well, way beyond it), Michael Jordan became the poster boy for excellence. In 1991, Gatorade released the famous ‘Be Like Mike’ campaign, which played on the everyman’s desire to pursue greatness just like His Airness.
Twenty-six years later, the jingle still resonates in the consciousness of a generation, as corny as the whole thing seems in retrospect.
Jordan Brand have just unveiled two new Jays that play on the ‘Like Mike’ motif, borrowing their colour palette from the brand’s logo, as well as the odd lightning bolt here and there. The pack contains the Air Jordan 6, which was released the same year as the campaign, and the recently released Air Jordan 32.
