Behind The Design: Nike's 2017 Air Max 1 Retro

Date: February 26 2017

The 30th anniversary of the Nike Air Max 1, the pioneering design that first featured a visible air unit, is approaching and we’re in for a treat. It would be remiss of Nike to not re-release the ever-popular OG red and white colourway, but in a celebration of three decades of the AM1, they’ve taken it one step further.

Though it first dropped in 1987, a lot of sneaker connoisseurs will tell you that the Air Max 1 was perfected in the late-90s. It was at that time that the toe was rounded out and the silhouette achieved its most desirable form. In order to cultivate the ultimate tribute, designers have referenced the 2004 ‘Urawa’ for the desired stance, toe and heel shape. Narrowing their sights down to the detail, the mesh, tongue construction and laces have been taken back to the beginning for one-to-one replicas of the OG.

Tinker Hatfield’s design changed the footwear game for good when it first dropped, now we’re getting a worthy tribute to a legendary sneaker. The Nike Air Max 1 retro will be dropping at Nike stockists on March 5, as part of the Air Max Day collection.
