To celebrate Asahi Super Dry’s 30th anniversary, two titans of Japanese industry — Asahi and ASICS — have collaborated on an extremely limited range of custom GEL-Lytes. Comprising five split-tongued sneakers, the collection honours Japanese craftsmanship.
Four pairs, a traditional GEL-Lyte III and the updated GEL-Lyte III NS, draw from Asahi’s iconic 500ml Silver Can and black packaging. Metallic shades on the uppers are met with hand-painted speckles and heel counters, and deubrés come laser-etched with Asahi's thirst-stoking branding.
Made with tan leather, the fifth GEL-Lyte dives deeper into Japanese culture with a build that references the country's 'minka' homes (traditional cottages distinguished by their thatched roofs, use of bamboo and sliding doors).
The collection is enough to have weeaboo sneakerheads emptying their pockets, but they’ll need to exchange their yen to NZD to cop. Of the mere 30 commemorative customs, all have been given away bar one complete set that is available exclusively through New Zealand's Trade Me, with all profits going towards helping the NZ Red Cross help others.
