This week is going to be a great week for a lot of ASICS collectors. After the legend of the '750 pairs still hidden in a secret vault deep below the KITH store in NYC' was teased, then confirmed, then beefed up, the shoes that legends are made of have been given official images and a release date.
Expounding on the initial collaboration in a blog post, Ronnie Fieg spoke of the Gel Lyte III's meaning to him and how the shoe's futurist execution in its early '90s salad days poised it to be easily fused with the modern Gel Nimbus:
'... I believe I have earned the respect of the Gel Lyte III enough to evolve it to the next level in a very limited once-in-a-lifetime fashion. And like many of you, I was and will always be skeptical of fusion silhouettes, however, the Gel Lyte III is an anomaly because its design was so ahead of its time in 1990. To see this upper mesh so seamlessly with ASICS’ top-of-the-line performance tooling today simply proves how timeless of a silhouette the Gel Lyte III is.'
Excitingly, the new pics also come with detailed release info. As was rumoured, there will be 700 pairs of each model. We'll still see two more 3.1s later in 2016, but Fieg stresses that these three releases will be the only time this silhouette ever hits retailers. The OG 'Super Green' will be a Kith exclusive, but the 3.1 will see a release through Colette, Slam Jam Milan, Dover Street Market London and United Arrows & Sons Harajuku, with each store only being allotted 24 pairs.
The Ronnie Fieg x ASICS Gel Lyte 'Super Green' pack will be released at the aforementioned stores on May 21, but Fieg is giving attentive fans two chance to cop before then. One will be online, one in store, and both will pop up spontaneously this week.
