UPDATE: To safeguard the safety of their investment, every NBA team implements a measure in player contracts to minimise the likelihood of injury. For Michael Jordan, this meant putting his interest in motorcycles on hold until after retirement, but love for the game was one passion he was not willing to suppress. Jordan negotiated a clause in his Bulls contract that allowed him to play in competitive pickup games in the NBA off-season, allowing him to rejoin his alma mater in two UNC alumni games in ’86 and ’87.
While he wore a standard Chicago style Air Jordan 2 make-up for the ’86 match, a ‘Carolina Blue’ accent was added for the ’87 game, ultimately becoming the very first Player Edition sneaker – a tradition that lives on in the NBA to this day.
Never before released to the public, this special Air Jordan 2 is finally hitting stores next week – on the 30th anniversary of that ’87 game and as part of ‘The 2 That Started It All’ pack. The pack also includes a UNC version of the Converse Fastbreak.
Air Jordan x Converse ‘The 2 That Started It All’ pack will release on June 28 through select retailers.
Jordan Brand and Converse have come together to produce the most surprising colab of the year, with each brand creating a tribute to Michael Jordan’s college roots at the University of North Carolina.
Converse’s contribution resurrects the final sneaker of the GOAT’s amateur career – the star-and-chevron-equipped Fastbreak – in UNC team colours. The Tar Heels’ signature cornflower blue adorns the leather and canvas sneaker’s branding and heel as well as the insole, which has been switched up with Lunarlon and the Air Jordan ‘Wings’ logo.
Over at the Jumpman, a special rendition of the Air Jordan 2 has been produced, featuring a mix of both Bulls’ and Tar Heels’ colours. Despite having never been released to the public, the hybrid make-up was worn by MJ in an alumni game against UCLA all the way back in June 1987. For an added touch, commemorative heel branding has been added in place of the traditional Nike text, with ‘MJ’ on the left and ‘6/28/87’ – the date of the game – on the right.
The Air Jordan x Converse ‘Alumni’ pack will release on June 28 through selected stockists, including Concepts.
