A Nod to Prefontaine on the Air Max 1

August 21, 2017

UPDATE: There was a time when a skull and crossbones motif looming in the distance was cause for worry – but in the imminent arrival of this ‘Rebel Skulls’ Air Max it only has us excited. Since this Air Max 1 first appeared on the horizon, an AM95 and AM90 have joined it and cemented the connection to Steve Prefontaine’s alma matter. Still unclear, however, is the exact release date. We’re hearing reports that they’ve been listed on NDC in some regions, and these images from Rock City Kicks hint that they may stock them soon.

If you were collecting sneakers back in 2007, this release might ring some bells. The motif on these new Air Max 1s harks back to 07’s classic ‘Skulls’ pack that paid homage to Steve Prefontaine. So named for the skull and crossbone borrowed from Pre’s high school team logo, the OG ‘Skulls’ wore colourful uppers and speckled soles. This AM1’s make-up, however, favours a pared-back approach with its mix of dark suede, leather, and a bone-white midsole that feels somewhat more fitting than the last. The skull logo itself isn’t the same as the OG’s, but the subtle nod to Swoosh history is enough to pique any Airhead’s interest.

The Nike Air Max 1 ‘Skulls’ is slated for a September release.
