Will Ronnie Fieg's Super Green GEL-Lyte III Return In 2016?
With just 300 pairs distributed exclusively to the earthquake-affected residents of Haiti back in 2013, Ronnie Fieg's 'Super Green' Gel-Lyte III has long been considered the Holy Grail amongst ASICS collectors. Over the years, a handful of pairs have managed to sneak their way on to the secondary market, with resell prices skyrocketing well into four-figure territory.
Despite the high demand, whispers have lingered in the collector community that a proper release is on the cards for the not-to-distant future. In an interview with Lee Deville, the world's biggest ASICS collector, in Sneaker Freaker issue #35, the Gel-Lyte expert touched on the rumour stating:
'Urban legend has it that there is a stockpile of around 750 pairs still hidden in a secret vault deep below the KITH store in NYC. Word spread over the years that once the year 2016 arrived, the vault would open and the market would be flooded'
Well, it looks like there may be some truth to the myth. In a recent Instagram post, Fieg himself posted a photo of himself clutching a version of his 'Salmon Toe' Gel-Lyte III featuring a blue midsole in place of the usual white alongside two other make-ups. While barely distinguishable from the front, a keen eye would recognise these to be none other than the Super Greens and the even more limited Mossad Gel-Lyte III, which has only existed in the sneaker world as a one-of-one sample at time of writing. The post was made with the simple caption 'Year 5', a likely reference to the 5th anniversary of the Salmon Toes this year.
True, Fieg's post image could just be a reflection of the past, but an Instagram post by KITH's Austin Scotti earlier today, showing a crispy pair of Super Greens supposedly about to undergo a Frankstein sole-swap, is certainly making the rumour of a 2016 re-release seem a whole lot more believable. Hell, we may even see the blue-soled Salmon Toes and Mossads this year as well!
We can't confirm the Super Greens will definitely be released in 2016, but we'll keep you posted here at SF if more confirmation rolls in.
