Originally released as a track shoe in 1972, the legendary Nike Cortez celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Team Swoosh are lauding the silhouette in classic style, with collaborations from the likes of Japan’s sacai and Union L.A. adding plenty of heat to release calendars.

A stalwart of the Los Angeles sneaker scene, Chris Gibbs’ Union is tapping into the Cortez’ long L.A. legacy for the upcoming collaboration, the dramatic design overhaul extolling the diverse cultures of the South Californian city.

Manufactured with woven textile underlays and thick suede overlays, the Cortez utilises Crater Foam midsoles and Nike Grind outsoles –both made with at least 10 per cent Nike Grind.

Both the Union x Nike Cortez ‘Sesami’ and ‘Off-Noir’ landed exclusively at Union on June 21. The ‘Sesami’ colourway is now slated to arrive at Nike on June 29. The retail price is $130.

A linchpin of Nike’s running catalogue of the 1970s, the Cortez was originally launched with the help of track coach, Bill Bowerman. For more on the Nike Cortez, check out ‘The Sneakers of Hip Hop’s Golden Age’.
