When was the last time you saw the word ‘secant’? For those that attempted advanced mathematics during senior high school or university, then the term likely would have appeared a few times during some geometry equations. One definition of secant is a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points. So, what do long-forgotten maths lessons have to do with these new adidas FYW Secant sneakers? Possibly sweet FA.

But, what can be gleaned from this trail-inspired design are some reference points that led to its creation. That sole unit is lifted straight from the recently revived FYW XTA OG, including the little ‘Freddy’ foot/face logo. Which is fitting, given the FYW designation of the Secant. Paired to this truck-tread outsole is a contemporary rework of the upper that features stripped-back components. As major proponents of the bootie-fit upper since the early-2010s, adi reprise it here.

The original XTA was full of layered hardware and oversized panels, while the Secant simplifies things with a neoprene and ripstop cradle. There are still some throwback nods to late-90s design with the reflective-lined lace loops and wavy toe box shapes. The upcoming colourways are suitably old-school too, one going full EQT in green, black and beige; while the other goes more neon in black, blue, and fluro yellow.

Both are out now from various adidas boutiques.
