Tom Sachs X Nike Mars Yard 2.0

Tom Sachs X Nike Mars Yard 2 0

Artist Tom Sachs is set to launch 'Space Camp' in New York City later this week, in collaboration with . Described as 'an experience in physical strength building and manual dexterity', this gruelling obstacle course-like event will also be accompanied by the short film The Hero's Journey, directed by Van Neistat.

Described by the New York Times as a work to 'stress the importance of failure in art and athletics (and in outer space)', Sachs and Nike have also conjured up a tie-in footwear collaboration for the occasion, itself a product of failure. In 2012, to celebrate the opening of Sach's SPACE PROGRAM: MARS art installation, the duo produced the – a conceptual sneaker that incorporated the same vectran fabric utilised in the Mars Excursion Rover airbags. Unfortunately, it was discovered that the material 'breaks like a paper clip' over time if folded too much in the same spot. As a result, the duo have revisited the design, replacing the NASA-made fabric with trusty ol' mesh for a release dubbed the Mars Yard 2.0.

Judging by a countdown timer on the NIKECraft website, it looks like the Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard 2.0 will release on June 8 to coincide with the launch of the Space Camp program, though exact details are yet to be announced. Head to the Nike website to book your spot.
