A legend of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting, Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s paintings continue to live-on in contemporary art and design circles. Now, Kuniyoshi’s paintings will meet another icon of culture: the Nike Air More Uptempo, a stalwart of 1990s sneakers.

Built with holographic overlays detailing Kuniyoshi’s signature style, the Air More Uptempo opts for classic black ballistic mesh uppers and glow-in-the-dark outsoles. Pony hair arrives on the toe box yet again, while silver Swooshes extend to the tongue, heel and aforementioned toe box.

The Air More Uptempo has received a ton of love from the Swoosh of late, the indelible silhouette (originally made popular by Scottie Pippen) rendered in ‘Sky Blue’, ‘Silver’ and ‘Maximum Volume’ in 2021.

Look for the Nike Air More Uptempo ‘Utagawa Kuniyoshi’ to release in the coming weeks. The retail price is $170.

In the meantime, read-up on why Scottie Pippen’s Air More Uptempo is the real MVP.
