The shin-scraping Slipstream represented the peak of PUMA’s basketball offering when it first emerged at the tail end of the 1980s. It's always maintained something of a cult following in the decades since, especially in Japan, where a number of limited editions have released over the years. Now, PUMA have prepped a new ‘Mutation’ edition that gives the uppers a slight nip-tuck to be more in line with current aesthetics, while retaining key cues to ‘The Beast’ moniker that became associated with this model.

What PUMA perceive to be ‘Mutation’ includes mildly deconstructing some upper panels, a practice that has been quite trendy for a few years now. It can be seen here on the eyestay panel flapping off at the ankle and forefoot, obscuring any traditional eyelets. In fact, the lacing system is fairly untrue to OG spec, opting instead for a variable-width arrangement of bungee loops and faux ghillie straps.

Aside from these visual changes, there are still some comforting familiarities to this Slipstream. Leather and suede is a period-correct combo with a well-intentioned lifestyle slant, while a closer look at the toe box, ankle collar and tongue reveals a tonal debossed leopard pattern.

The PUMA Slipstream ‘Mutation’ is available now from Foot District.
