Designed by Tinker Hatfield, and first hitting the scene in 1992, the Nike Air Raid holds a special place in the hearts of many sneakerheads. Recently re-entering the zeitgeist after Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo paid homage to the cult silhouette in 2019, the Air Raid is now poised to release in its gnarly OG ‘Black Grey’ colourway.

Initially designed for outdoor basketball (the sneaker was released as a competitor to Reebok’s Pump Blacktop), the silhouette is emblematic of Nike’s chunky sneaker obsession in the 1990s. Featuring criss-crossing midfoot straps, and ‘For Outdoor Use Only’ emblazoned on the heel, the Air Raid entered pop culture via the iconic commercial starring Tim Hardaway and Spike Lee.

In another interesting tidbit, Tinker Hatfield originally expressed a desire to call the Air Raid the Air Jack, as people would love the silhouette so much they’d want to steal them right off your feet!

Manufactured with rugged ballistic mesh, tumbled leather, and nubuck, the ultra tough Nike Air Raid utilises EVA foam in the midsoles, while the conspicuous absence of a Swoosh gives the silhouette even more of a unique aesthetic.

Look for the Nike Air Raid ‘Black Grey’ to release on October 8 at select retailers and Nike. The retail price tag is set at $140.
