The  Nike  Air Max 97 is preparing to dress in a ‘USA Denim’ scheme, with official images emerging of the impending release. While national-themed sneaker colourways are nothing new, it’s not every day you see the materials match the colour choices for a serious patriotic flex. Despite denim’s close association with other countries – Canadian Tuxedo anyone? – the super sturdy textile has been a constant presence in American fashion for multiple generations, not to mention a popular material choice for statement sneakers.

And the AM97 also has plenty of history to talk about. In the storied chapters of Air Max mythology, the Air Max 97 design was inspired by a Japanese bullet train – hence the ‘Silver Bullet’ moniker given to the OG colourway. However, the original designer of the silhouette, Christian Tresser, has previously said that the layered uppers represent ripples of water in a pond. Regardless of which origin story you choose to believe, the AM97 has left an indelible mark on the world of sneakers.

Pairs of the Air Max 97 ‘USA Denim’ are expected to hit Nike and selected Swoosh stockists very soon. We’ll let you know if an official date is announced.

Update: The ‘USA Denim’ scheme seems to be part of a pack from Nike, with similar renditions hitting the Air Force 1 and the Air Max 90.
