The Nike Air Max 97 Broods in Black and RedRelease: TBC
The Nike Air Max 97 is preparing to brood in black and red, with official images emerging this week of a menacing colourway for the popular silhouette. The finished product is predominantly black, with the fiery red details saved for maximum impact in areas such as the branding, visible Air unit, and heel tab, plus a thin stitched halo around that signature layered upper.
Beaverton boasts a long lineage of Air Max designs and, beyond the obvious Air-bubbled cushioning, one consistent element is the need for speed. Sneaker mythology often proclaims that the Air Max 97 silhouette was inspired by Japanese bullet trains – see the ‘Silver Bullet’ nickname given to the OG colourway. Yet, the designer behind the AM97, Christian Tresser, explains that the layered uppers represent ripples of water in a pond, and that the famous silver colouration of that OG was actually a reference to the ‘metal finishes like aluminum and polished titanium’ on BMX bikes. Regardless of what inspired this instantly-recognisable shape, most sneakerheads will agree that the AM97 has left an indelible mark on the sneakersphere.
Pairs of this black and red Nike Air Max 97 are expected to hit Nike and selected Swoosh stockists in the coming weeks, so make sure you’re ready to secure your pair.
