This year has seen a small but steady trickle of all-leather Nike Air Max 1s. The other month saw the ‘Spiral Sage’ edition that conspicuously resembled a classic colab, and now this ‘Martian Sunrise’ should get the old ‘heads out of the woodwork.

Long-time sneaker nerds will likely have instantly seen the resemblance to the Air Max 1 Leather SC from circa 1997, which essentially rendered the entire upper in leather. Which is what’s happening here on the ‘Martian Sunrise’, plus a few modifications – such as the embroidered mini-Swoosh, which is a period-correct ret-con. And while this AM1 doesn’t feature the tongue piping per earlier editions, the white, grey and red colour-blocking is so close to the OG that the missing tongue detail can be overlooked. Despite its intergalactic name, ‘Martian Sunrise’ is in fact a very accurate shade of red for the AM1, which works well in this arrangement on the Swoosh, mudguard, tongue label, top eyelet, heel embroidery, and outsole tip. Even the outsole has the correct black/white/black/red colour layout.

The Air Max 1 ‘Martian Sunrise’ is available now from atmos in Japan. International buyers will either need a local connection, or wait a few more months for the expected wider release.
