The  Nike  Air Force 1 has wrestled down a ‘Lucha Libre’ theme, after official images emerged of a super loud Uptown. The design starts with a shiny silver and white base, before adding colourful leather lace shrouds that are made to look like the iconic masks worn by Mexican wrestlers, especially when viewed from above.

‘Lucha Libre’ translates to ‘freestyle wrestling’ in English, and is the name given to the style of Mexican wrestling that dates back as far as the 1860s. The vibrant masks worn by combatants in modern Mexican wrestling are designed to evoke popular motifs such as animals, gods, and ancient heroes.

A genuine old school baller, the Air Force 1 was the first Nike basketball shoe to feature ‘Air’ cushioning, making it quite the game-changer when it debuted on the hardwood back in 1982. Over time, the beloved silhouette morphed from performance model to reliable lifestyle option, and its longevity was recently highlighted by the fact it was the  USA’s top-selling sneaker for the first half of 2021.

Pairs of the Air Force 1 ‘Lucha Libre’ are expected to smack down very soon at Nike and selected Swoosh stockists.
