Chinese/Lunar New Year celebrations may have come and gone in February, but that hasn’t stopped New Balance from releasing a thematic 991 colourway that thankfully can be worn all year round. The 991 has been a particular focus in 2021 because the former flagship runner has turned 20, whereby it has been enjoying renewed presence in the NB line-up.

Now taking on mature tones of brown, the materials are similarly befitting of a product that’s proven its mettle. Hardy suede – renowned throughout the footwear industry as some of the best available – makes up most of the material composition on these 991s, but there are generous amounts of mesh too. This is placed on the toe box and tongue, plus some additional panels where ventilation is prioritised over durability. This all sits atop NB’s ABZORB-imbued midsole with its two-toned finish displaying the dual-density foam compound.

As far as the ‘Year of the Ox’ designation goes, NB have kept things pretty low-key, only leaving references to the Chinese Zodiac sign – if that – with the CNY insole text, and auspicious red tongue backing. Which means year-round versatility of wear.

The New Balance 991 ‘Year of the Ox’ is out now from retailers such as Oneness.
