The  New Balance  550 is continuing its strong push into the wider sneakersphere consciousness, this time emerging in a neat grey and navy rendition that will be in stores before the end of this month. The 550 started its resurgence with a Aime Leon Dore colab, and then soon released more widely in a whole bunch of GR colourways, quickly becoming a retro favourite within the NB catalogue.

Speaking of catalogues, it was thanks to an old New Balance Japan catalogue that the 550 was able to return to the sneaker zeitgeist. Speaking late last year about the rediscovery of the 550,  Joe Grondin, senior manager of global collaborations at New Balance, said that ALD’s Teddy Santis found a random picture of silhouette and took a liking to it.

According to Grondin, ‘The only information we could find about it [the 550] was from an old New Balance Japan catalogue. We were lucky, because the Japan catalogues are super detailed. We started researching hashtags on Instagram and found this collector who had a pair. Once we got the shoe in-hand we built it from scratch with Teddy. He’s so particular about shape, so everything took us at least eight to 10 revisions. We were adjusting millimetres here and there just to get it right.’

This grey and navy New Balance 550 is scheduled to arrive in stores on June 24.
