It appears Nike are yet to wrap up the Air Presto 20th anniversary party that started last year, as they continue to reissue some of the model’s earliest and rarest colourways. Up next is the ‘Rainbow’ edition, which some sneakerheads never thought would come back.

The OG ‘Rainbow’ Air Presto released back in 2001 and was a Japan-only (i.e. co.jp) colourway. Believed to be a very early example of Nike’s BETRUE LGBTQI+ activity, very few pairs made it abroad in collectors’ suitcases and via JP-based resellers. Now these unicorns will thankfully allow day one fans and comfort-seeking sneakerheads alike to re-up on a classic release.

Because of the Presto’s t-shirt inspired sizing, thanks to its neoprene upper, the textile allows just about any combination of colour and graphics. Here, as the namesake suggests, a rainbow gradient fades from bright yellow to a dusky purple, much like the colours represented on the LGBTQI+ flag.

There are some minor deviations to the OG, namely the differently coloured individually shaded Alpha Project dots on the midsole heel. And arguably the uppers are slightly less saturated. But it’s no big deal. It will be worth buying multiples of this retro.

The Nike Air Presto ‘Rainbow’ is scheduled to release on March 12.
