Originally released in 1990, the iconic revels in its three-decade anniversary this year, welcoming back an all-time classic colourway as part of the festivities. Returning for the third time since its debut, the unmistakable ‘Fire Red’ colourway is fuelled for a grand renaissance, oozing the Chicago-themed style that made it one of most recognisable gamers during the 1990 season.

It could be one of the best OG retros we’ve seen in recent times, draped in crisp white leather on its high-cut upper. A hi-vis reflective silver tongue adds some shimmer, sporting a contrasting red Jumpman logo, as further branding comes via the familiar ‘Nike Air’ embroidery on the heel. More searing red detailing arrives on the ankle trim, complemented with a subtle hit on the trademark lacing toggle.

The sole is what sets the AJ5 apart, however, with Tinker Hatfield using the P-51 Mustang WW2 fighter plane as his inspiration. Painted with aggressive shark-toothed mouths, the aircraft’s design is mimicked using zigzagging red detailing, which comes through strong against the black midsole. Finally, an icy blue outsole adds balance to all the heat up top.

The Air Jordan 5 ‘Fire Red’ lights up at JD Sports on March 28 in a full-family size run.
