The expansive adidas ZX series is based around a numerical system corresponding to different running styles. There may be heavy emphasis on the four-digit offerings, but there are some sleeper hits in the three-digit range too, such as the ZX 420. Team Trefoil have periodically revived the ZX 420 as a pure lifestyle play some 30-plus years since it first debut. Here, it’s been remade in suede, making it much more a casual shoe than a performance runner.

Retro runners tend to have a reputation for being particularly attractive to dust – largely thanks to their supple suede and/or microfibre uppers. This is no different here, with ‘Cream White’ suede demanding extra care when necking down a pint or two at the local pub. These 420s also display various equivalent shoe sizes on the lateral heel counter, much like many other recent adidas releases. And interestingly, the tongue material is a textured type as found on older adi runners like the SL72, as opposed to the regular mesh or nylon. Some terry towel style lining and contrast blue tongue branding helps to tie the colourway together, as does the black rubber outsole.

The adidas ZX 420 ‘Cream White’ is available now from Foot District.
