Nike’s Dia De Los Muertos aka Day of the Dead commemorative sneakers date back all the way to 2006 with a famously rare Nike SB Dunk. Subsequent releases that help mark the Mexican celebration have been a little easier to obtain, but have remained as limited edition drops. 2020 sees Nike release the 'Día de Muertos' Collection which consists of the Air Max 90, Daybreak, Blazer Mid, and Air Jordan 1 Mid, centralised around the theme of ‘Para Mi Familia’, or ‘For My Family’.

Each model heavily features warm shades of yellow in reference to Marigold, which is closely linked to the Day of the Dead in Mexico. This colour is very prominent, from subtle contrast stitching to all-over panelling. The complementary colour used is burgundy-purple, another common tone seen in Mexico.

The Air Max 90s are the most intricately detailed pair of the collection, as every single upper panel is adorned with a different geometric pattern based on ‘papel picado’ decorations used during the holiday. Paired with bright shades of orange, red, and the aforementioned Marigold yellow, these are one of the most complex Day of the Dead releases seen in recent memory.

Meanwhile, the Daybreak and Blazer Mid tap into subtler executions and feature minimal detailing among their cracked leather and mesh uppers. But, look closely and you’ll spot more Marigold and papel picado references. And finally, the Air Jordan 1 Mid uses classic tri-tone colour-blocking, but ups the decorations with zig zag stitching, cracked leather, and custom branding.

The 2020 Nike Día de los Muertos collection is already out in Mexico, but a global release has been scheduled for October 15.
