Between a series of and shiny , more formal imaginings of sneaker styles are having their moment. Adding his take into the mix is Creative Director , who has recently paired with to dress up two in smart suede and tasselled detailing. This isn’t adidas’ only venture into fancy footwear as of late either, as earlier this year the brand teamed up with to put a brogue-style spin on the silhouette.

Originally launched in the 60s (when it was originally developed alongside, and named after French tennis star Robert Haillet), adidas' classic tennis shoe was eventually reincarnated under the Stan Smith moniker in 1978. At that point, its popularity on the court had waned, yet it had found its feet within the lifestyle market. By 1989, the Stan Smith had sold over 22 million pairs, and the Stan Smith has been reimagined more times than we care to count since then, occasionally veering into smart(ish) shoe territory with the likes of the Stan Smith Tuxedo from 2008.

Known for often embracing classic Americana and workwear-heavy styles, Nakada has applied his aesthetic by elevating the Stan Smith's style with suede uppers, while also taking advantage of the shoe’s signature perforations to create a brogue-like look. The Stan Smith’s usual flat laces have also been replaced with dainty rope ones, which thread through the removable tassels cut from matching suede panels.

The Shinsuke Nakada x adidas Stan Smith Lux will drop on May 22 in Japan, although wider release details are to follow. Stay locked for all the latest!
