Return of the Converse Weapon: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Laces Up for All-Star Weekend
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is making his second All-Star appearance in Indianapolis later this month, and along with hopefully scoring hoops, the basketball star will also help re-launch the Converse Weapon. Selected for his multi-dimensionality as an athlete and tastemaker, SGA mirrors the chameleonic qualities and versatility of the Weapon.
Originally hitting the hardwood in the mid-80s and worn by the likes of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, the Weapon still ranks among some of the most legendary sneakers to ever grace the court. It has recently scored points via all-star collaborations with , , and , but the partnership with SGA sees the Weapon and the brand-new Weapon Ox – a low-cut, casual version of the model – reach new heights while still paying homage to its roots.
SGA even posts up back-to-back with himself in an allusion to Converse's ‘Choose Your Weapon’ advertisements from the 1980s; however, where the retro ads bolstered rivalry, the new campaign, Create History, Not Hype, fosters inclusivity, community and creativity – all key touchstones for Converse in 2024 and beyond.
The newest colourways stay true to the Weapon's unique heritage, adopting a neutral palette that allows the OG blueprints to take centre court. Coming in the original mix of black/natural ivory and vintage white/ash stone/egret, these renditions are certified buckets. The brand new Weapon Ox iterations are also locked and loaded, with the classic white and black palette accompanying vintage white and cargo makeups. Both the Weapon and Weapon Ox models feature leather uppers, Star Chevron underlays, egret cupsoles and outsoles, and the Weapon’s signature Y-bar.
