are answering the call for more women’s exclusives with the hotly-anticipated ‘Starfish’, which flips a familiar colourway via a clever material mix-up. At first glance, the ‘Starfish’ certainly resembles the OG ‘Bred’ AJ4 that sneakerheads know and love. But closer inspection reveals this to be a whole new shade of zesty ‘Starfish Orange’, a coral shade that well could’ve been extracted from aquatic life beneath the surface.
Zany colour names aside, the official canon couldn’t be further away: the concept of these 4s is actually inspired by hi-tech space suits, which explains the metallic mesh uppers in place of the usual durabuck or leather. Raw edges are all the rage right now; and the ‘Starfish’ delivers plenty of shimmering contrast on the panel lines. As are exposed foam seams on tongues, which this AJ4 also delivers. Elsewhere, period correct hardware like black and grey plastic lace ‘wings’, black rubber grid mesh inserts, and the tri-toned Air midsole help shake things up on and off the court, 30-plus years on.
