Puma is reviving technology for its running line! The new Puma Disc was unveiled over the weekend in Jamaica and Sneaker Freaker made the trek to Kingston to see it all go down. The Disc dial was first introduced as a lace substitute 25 years ago; it tightens the shoe upper for a custom fit by constricting a web of wires embedded under the external mesh layer. This closure system is one of very few zany technologies to last the distance from a famously idiosyncratic era in footwear design – it still persists in Puma's Disc casual series.

The re-incarnation of the tech in Puma's serious running line is a welcome surprise, though, and the Disc Ignite features several updates. The dial itself is quicker to turn and faster to tighten, and the fine steel wires shape around the foot comfortably with each twist. Then there's the IGNITE foam, which offers exceptional support, comfort and energy return.

Right now in this shoe-niverse of ours, it feels like we're toe-deep in another innovation war, so it's gonna be intriguing to see how these kryptonite kicks fare at market. Judging by the compliments I got on the plane, I'm thinking they should do just fine. There are rumours that lifestyle-focused colourways are also en route (like ), so watch that space.

The Puma Ignite Disc, along with the pro spike evoSPEED Disc Spike (last picture), will hit retailers very soon. Stay tuned to SF for more Disc news over the coming days.
