Cryoshot Engaged: Nike Defrost Football Icons, Patta Join the Kick-Off

Are you ready for the takeover? Over the weekend, co-founder Guillaume 'Gee' Schmidt dropped a sneak peek of a cold new collaboration: the Patta x Cryoshot Mercurial.
Drenched in metallic silver with bold black overlays and a burst of orange, it swaps out R9’s OG blue for something a little more Amsterdam. A custom extended tongue stamped with Patta’s logo seals the deal. Coming off the back of their ‘Waves’ re-up, it looks like the Dutch label is gearing up for a full-blown football-fashion takeover.
As for the mainline Cryoshot, the new silhouette is Nike at its most chaotic – in the best way. Dropping this summer, the inaugural duo transforms two of football’s most iconic boots into street-ready heat. The Mercurial 98, famously worn by Ronaldo, and the Tiempo 10R, immortalised by Ronaldinho, both get a remix. But here’s the kicker: Nike have taken the actual studded plates from the OG cleats and frozen them inside a translucent midsole, like some cryogenic relic. It's part Air Max, part fossil – and totally cooking.
Nike’s wider football strategy suggests a full-pitch press. They’ve recently begun reissuing early-2000s classics like the Total 90 series, including the Air Zoom Total 90 III, now retooled with lifestyle-friendly soles and colourways.
On the sustainability front, Nike have phased out kangaroo leather across their football boots, replacing it with advanced synthetics that maintain feel and control while significantly reducing environmental impact – a major shift that reflects both tech innovation and ethical evolution.
