Nike Celebrate Phil Knight's 80th Birthday with New Colourways
Nike's co-founder Phil Knight will be celebrating the big 8-0 in February 2018, but the Swoosh have kicked off the party early. In honour of Knight, Nike will host the PK80 basketball tournament from November 23-26 in Portland, Oregon.
A prominent lineup of NCAA College basketball teams will participate in the tournament. On court, you'll see face-offs between Arkansas, Butler, Connecticut, Duke, DePaul, Florida, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Stanford and Texas.
The billionaire is known for wearing black outfits with accompanying sunglasses. Nike has taken some fashion cues from the mogul in designing the kicks that players will wear during the match-ups.
In the ultimate birthday tribute, the Swoosh have created blacked-out models of their most popular basketball silhouettes for players to wear during the tournament. There'll be all-black versions of the KD10, Kyrie 3, Kobe A.D. and PG1. And, because Michael Jordan's alma mater North Carolina is the only team in this contest with a Jordan Brand sponsorship, the Tar Heels will tear up the court in black Jordan 32s and Super.Fly 2017s. Iridescent accents have been incorporated into each shoe as a nod to Knight's sunglasses.
At this point, these shiny black models appear to be PEs only, but perhaps a retail release will be announced closer to the date of Knight's actual birthday. Even though it's coming months early, a basketball tournament and six reworked silhouettes makes for a pretty sweet birthday gift!
