Nike and Jordan Brand Honour Family and Tradition with 2021 'Dia de Muertos' Collection

Nike Air Force 1 'Dia de Muertos'
Air Jordan 1 Mid 'Dia de Muertos'

Each year, Nike celebrate Dia de Muertos (the Day of the Dead) with special footwear and apparel releases inspired by the Mexican holiday and its rich traditions. 2020 saw a four-shoe collection centred around traditional patterns and marigold flowers, but 2021 is trimming the offerings (and changing the inspiration), supplying an Air Force 1 Low and Air Jordan 1 Mid 'Siempre Familia' that represent Mictlán, a nine-level journey from Mexican folklore that 'celebrates the infinite power of family connection with loved ones,' according to Nike.

A multitude of textures is front and centre on the collection's designs. The low-cut Air Force 1 combines black stingray leather, a colourful embroidered Swoosh and leather overlays with traditional embossed detailing, while the mid-top Air Jordan 1 looks to a 'jaguar print,' toothed detailing around the toebox, a special Swoosh with an arrow and 'Siempre' and 'Familia' stamped on the tongues.

Besides the shoes, there's also an apparel collection that consists of a bomber jacket and T-shirts. Each of these pieces combines recognisable Nike symbols with illustrations from the Mictlān, ranging from dogs to jaguars, iguanas and skulls/bones.

If you're looking to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with this collection, you can expect it to hit SNKRS in Mexico on October 24, then arrive on Mexico's Nike app October 26. A global release will go down October 29.
