Nike are applying pressure with new colourways of the revived Air Tuned Max, which returned at the beginning of the year for the first time since its 1999 debut. A number of lifestyle-friendly palettes have entered the mix in 2021, and the latest ‘Cream’ edition is a welcome dollop on top.

Non-original colour scheme aside, this Air Tuned Max does stick to its factory settings on the material front. Technical mesh inlays meet synthetic overlays, which Nike can’t help but shine with metallic shades. Some room is left for the design’s distinct TPU webbing across the midfoot, but the real tech story on the upper is the iridescent Foamposite ankle counter. Of course, the midsoles are also worth mentioning, as they feature their eponymous Tuned Air technology.

What has changed is its aforementioned ‘Cream’ colourway. The tan tone is a massive departure from the copper brown and black OG, but this near-inversion actually works quite well. The lining verges on gold, which highlights one of the many textile textures going on across the shoes. And those silver overlays are matched with the Air unit’s internal highlights.
