Before diving into this latest Nike release, let’s take a moment to reflect on how hilariously bad 1997’s Batman & Robin was. Despite boasting an ensemble cast featuring massive names like George Clooney, Uma Thurman and Alicia Silverstone, the film was a critical flop because of its ridiculous plot and cheesy lines. These frigid one-liners were delivered by no other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze, which included zingers like ‘Ice to meet you.’ Which brings things nicely to this new Air Force 1 High Utility 2.0 – nicknamed ‘Deep Freeze’ – that could very well have been part of his costume.

This model is appropriately a winterised version of the classic AF-1 and adds beefier components to tackle cold weather. A high-cut ankle keeps the frost out, which is cinched down using a rather elaborate strapping system involving webbed nylon, bungie cord, suede, and a large metal hook. Heavily washed suede and nubuck meets ballistic nylon for durability, suitably matching the beefy rubber outsole that exaggerates distinct elements of the original tread. On the branding side, a large translucent Swoosh is a cool touch. And the most interesting element of here is the blue tones reminiscent of garment dyeing, earning the ‘Deep Freeze’ moniker.

The Air Force 1 High Utility 2.0 ‘Deep Freeze’ is available now from Nike China, but availability could soon be global.
