Tokyo-based retailer the Apartment have a particular knack for nailing 90s street style: imagine slouchy mountain jackets, baggy cargo pants paired to loosely laced New Balance runners. After their GORE-TEX-infused NB 801 collaboration last year, the Apartment are back with a ‘Mustard Dip’ 574, which they’re calling ‘a classic with a little twist’.

Many food-themed sneakers go a long way to interpret their edible inspiration in sneaker form, but the Apartment take things a bit more literally. The ‘Mustard Dip’ 574 looks like the front end of the sneakers have been generously dunked in the yellow condiment, with sunny suede toe bumpers completely covered in colour. It even runs off into the very front of the midsole portion.

The rest of the colab is a clean affair. Yes, they’re another pair of grey NBs, but the Apartment have specced a darker shade than usual. Plus they’ve added more padding to the tongue and an elastic gusset to make loose lace rocking more secure. Furthermore, a secondary pair of mustard yellow terry towel lined insoles allow for sockless wear (but only if absolutely necessary, TBH). As the forefoot is stamped, ‘WE ARE DIFFERENT’. Indeed.

Keen as mustard for this colab? They release at the Apartment on July 11 – call the plug.
