A premier entry in the annals of ’s history, the is a technical runner that became a Japanese style icon. First released in the mid-90s the model caught the public's attention, but was positioned at a price point out of most people’s reach. It bubbled away for a couple of years on the peripherals of sneaker culture until, in 1999, mita sneakers and MadHECTIC had the opportunity to work on a New Balance, and pounced on the 580. At a time when colabs were rare, the sneaker enjoyed an unprecedented success that built to a crescendo of partnerships like Stüssy’s Japan exclusives, which are revered as grails to this day.

In the twenty years that it’s walked the earth, the 580 has been graduated by key upgrades. First, the MT prefix denoted the inclusion of a carbon fibre ‘Roll Bar’, then the addition of an ‘R’ in the MRT580 signified a REVLITE midsole. These days it's not so often we see the original MT580, Roll Bar and all, but here it is!

Informed by the NB1300JP – another number that became legendary after Japan exclusive colourways – this new 580 has a deep, steely blue over its suede and mesh construction. The tongue label has the beloved, vintage 14 bar flying NB logo, and the shoe is packaged in a box decorated with dripping blue and graffiti-inspired branding.
