New Balance Dress Up the 992 in Red, White and Blue
Stopping short of draping their popular in the US flag, latest colourway of their homegrown runner is one of its most patriotic yet, even if it’s not necessarily the main intention here. Instead, it seems to be more of a play on collegiate colours, and an increasingly frequent move away from NB’s signature shades of grey.
The re-acquaintance with pigments on the 992’s pigskin and mesh upper has been an inevitability in the making ever since the model was revived in early 2020. This new drop sees a lot of blue up top, plunging panels usually devoid of any hues into deep oceanic tones. There’s also a bit of a material play here as the rear quarter is swapped for crisp white nylon, and the midfoot N logos are covered in fuzzy chenille, which is red.
On the red side of things, the bright colour also appears on the front half of the midsole – an area usually left plain white or black. This uncommon sight meets the highlighted ABZORB heel pad, another section where it’s not normal to get coloured in. Elsewhere, clean white adds accents and a break from the intense palette.
