Update February 25, 2022: The New Balance 992 in wheat colours has quietly released directly at NB.

The 992 is one of the hardest working models in the New Balance offering at the moment, so it seems quite appropriate that it’s been dressed up in yellow shades reminiscent of the wheat boots commonly seen at work sites. This practice was recently seen on the 574, which worked quite well, so it’s bound to be another blue-collar winner on the premium 992.

This new iteration retains the 992’s proud, true blue Made In USA status, with manufacture and most materials sourced from communities local to New Balance’s Stateside headquarters. A higher level of quality construction is reflected in the upgraded materials here, which replaces the mid-2000s runner’s original suede and mesh mix with tonal wheat-coloured nubuck. Which makes this a sneaker more suited for colder temperatures as opposed to the sweaty summer. The monochromatic wheat colour does get some slight contrast via the darker mudguard and heel counter, plus the two-tone foam midsole nods back to the original 992’s specifications. Finally, the black heel stability clip is an in-the-know nod to the famous boot that inspired this colourway and countless other workwear-flavoured sneakers over the years.
