New Balance's famed 990 series is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022, and though the line is five models deep – with a sixth set to drop sometime later this year – many a sneakerhead keeps a special place in their heart and their shoe rack for the OG 990. The grandaddy of the 99x series, the 990 first dropped back in 1982 for a then-unheard-of $100, which adjusted for inflation is roughly $355 in modern dollars! It's been brought back gradually over the course of the year, first appearing as part of the inaugural Teddy Santis-curated MADE in USA drop before going on to drop in a 'Dusty Rose' colourway as part of the extensive KITH x New Balance 990 series capsule. Now, shortly after restocking in its original grey colourway, it's back in another classic scheme: black and white.

Crafted of at least 70 per cent domestic materials, this 990 boasts a beautiful, trim black suede and mesh upper. White serves up contrast on the midfoot logo, laces and tongue tag, while reflective silver gets in on the mix at the top of the heel. A large plastic heel clip enhances stability, while a dual-density ENCAP midsole supplies comfort and original Vibram outsoles complete the look.

If you're looking to get your 990 on, you can do so via the New Balance webstore now. This pair is priced at $175.
