Mizuno Put the Wave Rider β ‘Grey’ and ‘Beige’ to the Test
Mizuno are ready to make a splash with their latest Wave Rider β, aka the Wave Rider Beta – the ‘sportstyle’ ivory to the Japanese brand’s performance-running ebony. On the topic of two tones, that’s exactly what’s going on with the latest β release, which boasts ‘Grey’ and ‘Beige’ editions extracting maximum contrast from minimal shading to great effect.
The Wave Rider β isn’t simply a borrowed name on a simple sneaker. Its Wave Rider moniker means Mizuno’s flagship technology is contained within; the culmination of 26 years of R&D is on show at ground level. The waves that flow through the midsole design seem to propel the foot forward, aided further by the namesake Wave plate sandwiched in the heel. It’s the latest refinement of a concept pioneered by the brand since the 1990s – as such, the β’s midsole is actually shared with its Wave Rider 26 sibling, the incumbent top-of-the-line running model.
Besides the all-new midsole, the upper of the Wave Rider β is also an original creation, but it does take the time to reference its forebears. Elements of the Wave Rider series from generations 8 to 11 wash onto the upper, creating a chimeric combination of smart nods and fresh ideas on a neo-retro sneaker. For the trainerspotters playing at home in need of a clue, take a closer look at the toe cap panel, then ID that against the aforementioned Wave Rider predecessors. The rest falls into place soon after.
This two-pair arrival of the Wave Rider β sees steadfast adherence to the classic sneaker material combination of suede and mesh – a liberty that its Wave Rider 26 complement can’t exercise (yet). There is some new-age thinking, too, with the ‘hotmelt’ underlays bonded to the midfoot for extra support and contrast behind the Mizuno ‘RunBird’ logo. The respective ‘Grey’ and ‘Beige’ colourways each make full use of the generous suede panelling on the upper, which is contrasted by tasteful off-white colouring filling the remaining mesh areas. Some reflective hits are also included for good measure.
