Mizuno have announced their first collaborative effort on their new Wave Rider β, aka Wave Rider Beta, with long-time brand partners BEAMS. Unlike the retro-future stylings of inline editions to date, the Japanese retailer takes things to the old world with a traditional textile substitution.

Firstly, a quick rundown on the new Wave Rider β. It’s Mizuno’s latest entry into the flagship Wave Rider series but the first to occupy their Sportstyle category. It borrows the sole unit from the Wave Rider 26, the incumbent top-of-the-line model in the running line. The β’s upper pulls inspiration from 2000s archive Wave Riders from eighth to 11th generations, leaving a trail of clues for keen trainerspotters to decipher.

Back to BEAMS. Their previous Mizuno reworks have each explored different material clashes, and that’s the same case here on the β. It incorporates unique woven hemp mesh on the toe box, vamp and heels, complementing sand coloured suede. The remainder of the colour-blocking is finished with stone grey soles and lining. According to the collaborators, the natural palette is derived from sandy scenes and old world desert boots.

The BEAMS x Mizuno Wave Rider β releases on April 21 via select Mizuno retailers globally.
