The ‘mulement’ is gaining steam by the day, and although its shoes may be backless, its ethos of ease and casual comfort has a real spine to it. Now, British designer Martine Rose and Nike are the latest duo to join in the action with the official announcement of their Shox Mule MR4 colab.

Created to celebrate England’s hosting of Europe’s women’s soccer championships this month, Rose’s mule-ified Shox were created to ‘dissolve the boundary between getting off the plane and getting on the pitch,’ in the designer’s own words. This idea was borne from Rose’s observation that when men’s national soccer teams arrive at international tournaments, they’re kitted out in luxurious bespoke tailoring – while the women’s teams often travel in matching team tracksuits. ‘We recognized a great opportunity to really focus on women and football, and then make a trainer that’s almost like a smart shoe,’ she says.

Rose’s special Shox are a Shox R4 in name only, much as the same way her previous Air Monarch colab was unlike any Air Monarch we’ve seen before. The toe is stretched and pointed far more than the model they’re inspired by, the heel, of course, is nowhere to be found, and the rear polyurethane Shox are significantly elongated for a heel-like look. They’ve been produced in a black and red colourway as well as a white and silver makeup, both of which feature hi-vis reflective accents and special Martine Rose branding.

This isn’t Nike’s first go-around with mule-like footwear this decade – their recent Offline clog has been a casual hit, Jordan Brand have a sporty clog of their own on the way, and no Swoosh head can ever forget the Foamposite-inspired Clogposite. But it is the first to give a high-fashion spin to an icon of 2000s sport. Let’s see where the ‘mulement’ takes us next!

Expect the Martine Rose x Nike Shox Mule MR4 colab to drop on Martine Rose’s webstore come July 7. A Nike SNKRS release may follow later in the year as well.
