Maison Margiela and Reebok Continue Distinctive Classic Leather Tabi and Club C ColabRelease: 21 May 2021
Maison Margiela’s collaboration with Reebok on the Classic Leather Tabi gave the mainstream sneakersphere a taste of the avant-garde, which certainly divided opinions as much as it did the big and middle toes. Having already released paint-covered Tabis, plus tonal black and white editions, the two collaborators continue rolling out bold options with incoming all-red and greyed-out colourways landing this week.
The Classic Leather Tabi, when viewed from the back, appears innocuous enough, but its wild side is on full display with the obvious split toe design that cuts through the leather toe box right through to the outsole. It’s quite a feat to tweak the almost 30-year-old design and maintain the DNA from both parties.
In a slightly less radical departure from classic Reebok designs, Margiela has also taken on the Club C, referencing the ‘trompe l’oeil’ technique of printing the upper design onto a single flat piece of leather (save for the heel tab and toe bumper). This optical illusion enhances the bright red execution.
Scrounge together your savings ahead of the May 21 release, because the Maison Margiela x Reebok collaboration isn’t cheap at $300 (and equivalent currencies around the world). However, given the sell-out response to previous drops, fashionistas and sneakerheads alike will be ready to dig deep at select Reebok and Margiela retailers.
