Breaking the two-hour marathon mark has become in the ongoing sneaker tech war. A counter-offensive to Nike’s BREAKING2 initiative, ' runner debuted over the weekend at the Tokyo Marathon — and it didn’t go so well.

Competing in the new shoe and eyeing a new world record, adidas’ marquee marathon man Wilson Kipsang was forced to withdraw from the race midway, citing stomach problems. Talk about a PR disaster!

The key component in adidas and Kipsang’s pursuits to break the two-hour barrier, the adiZero BOOST Sub2 features a new BOOST Light midsole and a Microfit upper for an extremely lightweight package.

Once thought to be impossible, initiative saw world-renowned runners Eliud Kipchoge, Zersenay Tadese, and Lelisa Desisa attempting to run a full marathon in under two hours. Kipchoge came agonisingly close, finishing 25 seconds outside the mark, but still managed to achieve the fastest marathon time in history.

With more big meets on the horizon, Team Trefoil will get more opportunities one-up the Swoosh and break the two-hour mark. However, if you’re looking to slice seconds off your own PB, the adiZero BOOST Sub2 will be available to the public on March 15 via adidas.com and select stockists.
