First Look: Nike's Air Huarache Grip

The ’s original 1991 design changed the game. It stripped away the bulky ankle support of its contemporaries, replacing it with form-fitting neoprene in a minimalist approach that was unheard of at the time. But it was controversial for another reason. Apart from an embossed ‘’ on the heel strap, there was no other recognisable branding, save for a silhouette-specific badge on the tongue.

The Air Huarache Grip sees that badge writ large. It takes the iconic logo and stretches it across a detachable lace shroud, which hugs the new ankle-high collar. Elsewhere, Tinker Hatfield’s design has been re-jigged too: the ‘Nike’ on the heel cage has been replaced with ‘Grip’ and the neoprene toe box has been supplanted by hardy nylon. Oh, and these ones carry a Swoosh.

The latest member of the Hua family will hit stores in ‘Sail’/‘Team Orange’ and Black/‘Olive Canvas’/‘Indigo Burst’ on September 22.
